What can I do to secure my personal computer?

Since the malware in your webspace was uploaded by FTP you will need to do a thorough security scan of your local machine. You should check for trojans, viruses, root kits, key loggers, spyware, and other types of malware that could have infected your computer. The very best way to ensure that the security problem is solved is to back up your data after you have removed any trojans and do a fresh install of your operating system. You may want to try using multiple scanners. Here is a list of free software that you can use:

Free Antivirus software

Clamwin, based on the open source ClamAV
Avast – Free version available
AVG – Free version available

Free antispyware software

Spybot search and destroy
Adaware 2008 free
Windows Defender
CWS Shredder

Free Firewall Software

Filseclab (Detects programs attempting to bind to ports)
Comodo personal firewall (detects portbinding, compatible with Vista)

After you have secured your personal computer you should change all passwords. These include:

- your 1&1 FTP account
- your 1&1 Control Center (service password)
- your eBay account
- your PayPal account
- your online banking account
