I received an e-mail about virus spam, please tell me more


Q: Is this e-mail legit?
A: We are currently informing affected customers. Please check if the customer id in the e-mail matches your 1&1 customer id and if you are being addressed by name.

Q: How do you know that my computer has been infected?
A: We are using a virus scanner to check our systems. This scanner has identified an e-mail containing a virus that was sent from your e-mail address. In addition our abuse team works closely with government and other agencies that deal with the prevention of abuse and receive notifications from customers.

Q: From which e-mail address was the virus e-mail sent?
A: The name of the e-mail address is listed in the notification you received from our abuse team.

Q: Were the affected e-mails sent?
A: No. We deleted the e-mail for reasons of security.

Q: Did you send me a notification that the e-mail was not delivered?
A: No, for reasons of security we do not bounce e-mails containing a virus back to the sender.

Q: Is there any virus scanner you can recommend?
A: Support recommends available 1&1 virus protection options such as Norton

Q: When did this incident occur?
A: We notify you within two hours of the email being sent.

Q: Impossible, since I am not using MS Windows!
A: Other operating systems can also be infected by a virus. In addition your password might be read from a computer at an internet cafe or a friend's place that was infected.
