What is Cent OS?Cent OS stands for Community Enterprise Operating System. It is a free Linux distribution based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Red Hat Enterprise Linux uses software that is GPL, (GNU Public License) but is offered to subscribers as a paid service which includes support. The binary packages and kernel of Red Hat Enterprise Linux are open source, and because they are GPL licensed this source code is available to all. Cent OS is essentially the same operating system as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but all Red Hat branding has been removed, and support is offered through the community rather than through the paid support model offered by Red Hat. The binary packages and kernel used by Red Hat Enterprise Linux are only included in the commercial release after rigorous testing for security and stability, because this operating system is intended to be deployed in an enterprise network. Cent OS uses the same kernel and binary packages, therefore it is also very stable and very secure. |
