Using PuTTY to Log onto the Serial Console

Using PuTTY to Log onto the Serial Console

1. Start PuTTY and the following window appears

2. The Console server name must now be entered into the PuTTY window that is displayed in the Serial Console screen under the Server Data Panel. You MUST also select the SSH Port (port 22). Under Saved Sessions you have an option to enter a name for the session, this can save time entering the Console name every time you want to use the Serial Console. Once the information has been entered you can then click the 'Save' option.

3. Click in the Window link and expand the configuration tree. Select the translation option then choose the option "UTF-8" from the drop down menu Received data assumed to be in which character set.

Also make sure that the Unicode Mode is chosen.

4. Click on Open and enter the User name and password when requested in the
new PuTTY client window which is given in the Serial Console screen and then
press "Enter".

5. Once you are prompted with "Escape character is '^]' " What this message
is meant to convey is to log out press the "ctrl" key and the " ] " at the same
time and this will bring you to a telnet prompt where you will type "quit" and
then press "Enter". You will need to press "Enter" again because the log in
prompt has already been sent to the screen.

6. Log in to server with you user account on the machine. In most
instances it is root as user and the root password.

You are now logged on to your server through the Serial Console.

Please note
You may be asked to enter your user name and password twice!
